With our country in such a state of despair, one might feel less than patriotic. There is so much hate, violence and greed running rampant, we’ve lost sight of who we are as Americans. When the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, it was because people wanted freedom. They wanted to get away from the Reign of Great Britain and become independent states. They wanted to accept everyone, not just those from the English Colonies.
The Declaration of Independence wasn’t perfect, but it was an incredible start. The leaders weren’t perfect, the ideologies were still unforgiving to a lot of people. As time went on we learned more about science, about the environment and about how humans themselves work. This took time and education. We may have wanted to accept everyone, but we did not right away. In fact, it took years to make equality seem normal. Even now, it’s not as widespread as it should be. White men ruled, but over time the mentality began to fade. With the documents in place, it was the very basis the country needed to accept everyone in the future.
People from around the world came to America with hopes of a better life. That sentence has been said over and over again, but it’s the plain truth. We all have the opportunities to make our lives beautiful, but the only person who can, is ourselves. The government was put in place to make sure our rights as living, breathing human beings are protected, but we’re losing sight of that. We are one of very few countries who can change the laws of our government, we have the voices. We have Freedom of Speech.
Traveling to Learn
I’ve traveled all of the world, I’ve seen different governments operate and how people live. I do not take what I have for granted. But I also believe that humans are a single race. Our internal bodies are exactly the same. Our brains, our organs and our muscles, have the same makeup. Lest us forget that just because the colors of our skin may be different, does not mean that any person matters less. Internally we were created equal, but externally we’ve turned against each other in a “better than” them group mentality.
On this Independence Day, let us remember why we wanted to create this country so many years ago. The principles of which we stand, can and should hold true. Instead of tearing others down to get to the top, we should respect, teach and empathize with each other for a greater goal of happiness, love and support.
So while you BBQ, celebrate and enjoy the long weekend, please take a moment to remember why you get to. It’s beautiful and it’s open for everyone to enjoy. Therein lies the very reason we’re here today.
