What started in 2010 as way for food trucks to gather and create a space for the community to hang out and eat delicious food, soon turned into a bay area icon. Find me any place with tons of food – i.e. L.A. Smorgasbord – and I’ll be there. So tune in while I give you the deets on Off the Grid Market – Oakland.
19 vendors showed up to Lake Merritt this Friday, including Curry Up Now, Southern Comfort Kitchen and Lobsta Truck. You bet I strolled past each one to get a eye on what they were serving.
- Mac and Cheese with Bacon, Scallions, Truffle Oil and Parmesan and Jack Rabbit.
- Crab Fries with Old Bay Garlic Aioli from Southern Comfort Kitchen
- Chicharron and Cheese Pupusas
- Thai Iced Tea and Japanese Crepes
Live music, a bar and tons of foodie choices. Lucky for me, I had the best foodie partner to attend with me. We ordered a few of our favorites and shared it all. I was surprised to love the Thai Iced Tea so much. It was a spontaneous order, but the best of the night. The second best was the loaded mac and cheese. INCREDIBLE.
While I was able to attend the Lake Merritt event, there are plenty of others held around the city on various days. From Friday nights to Tuesday afternoon lunches, check out the closest one to you on their website, www.offthegrid.com/events
Their Awesome Goal
By using underutilized spaces to create a fun environment involving food, music and something to do, Off the Grid is helping communities and neighborhoods have an experience with their friends and family. They reach out to local businesses and food trucks to incorporate flow between community and business. What better way to spend a few hours than chatting with friends and eating yummy food?
